Chicken Care FAQs
Can I keep just one chicken?
Chickens are social animals and need each other’s company. They will pine, and probably stop laying, if left alone. Two should be looked on as the absolute minimum, and a hen left as a singleton after the deaths of other birds should be given companions as quickly as possible.
What should I think about before buying chicken?
Before choosing, you need to decide why you are planning to keep chickens. It could be for eggs, meat, a child’s pet, a show bird, some mobile, feathered garden decorations, or a combination of these things. Many chicken keepers go for an all-rounder breed such as the Rhode Island Red and Barred Plymouth Rock.
Do chickens need bringing indoors at night?
As long as the coop is always open, you will not have to worry about rounding them up like straying sheep. Hens “come home to roost” when it starts to get dark, and all you have to do is close the door behind the last one. Any hen left out in the dark for any reason will be helpless, and can easily be lifted up and brought back to safety.
Chicken Toys
Chickens like to play. Just as a dog enjoys a stick or a cat has fun with a ball of wool, hens enjoy ‘games’ involving perching and pecking. A chicken toy is something the birds can interact with, to stimulate and satisfy their natural instincts and behaviors. The common toys are like, chicken swings as they like to get up high for a good lookout spot and peck toys for them to see reservoir of food.
